Minnesota Twins first baseman Miguel Sanó will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus, manager Rocco Baldelli said on Tuesday. No timeline is yet available for when Sanó can return.

Sanó, 28, has had a rough start at the plate with an .093 average and one home run in 17 games. He's never been known to hit for a high average, but he hit 34 home runs in 2019 and 30 in 2021. He's only appeared in one of the Twins' past six games.

The Twins benched Sanó late last June when he was batting under .200, and Sanó said that motivated him to lose 22 pounds during the offseason.

A season of struggles for Sanó hit its high point Tuesday as his focus on hitting to right-center finally paid off.

Plus players to be named later, Carlos Correa's odds of sticking around past this season and what to make of Dylan Bundy's early success.

Motivated by his benching last June, Sanó transformed himself this winter, going from being in satisfactory condition to outstanding shape.

Sanó feels that shedding the weight will allow him to hit the ball to the right side of the field with more authority.
