LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A western Michigan sheriff's deputy will not face criminal charges after an altercation during a traffic stop led to the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in June, a county prosecutor said.
Allegan County Prosecutor Myrene Koch wrote in a report sent Friday to Michigan State Police that her review found that the officer who has not been identified “feared for his life” and the fatal shooting was “reasonable under the extreme circumstances.”

Braxton Garrett pitched six effective innings in his first major league start in a month, and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 5-2. Garrett allowed one run — Lane Thomas’ leadoff homer in the first — and five hits. Garrett Cooper and Jon Berti each doubled and singled for the Marlins. Berti also stole his NL-leading 37th base. Dylan Floro handled the ninth for his sixth save.
Aaron Judge was held without a homer for the third straight game, keeping him at 60 for the season and one shy of Roger Maris’ American League record, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4. Jose Trevino singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the eighth inning, and the first-place Yankees reduced their magic number to five for clinching the AL East title. With four of Maris’ children in the ballpark again, Judge went 1 for 4 with a sharp single. He struck out twice and lofted a high fly to left field that excited the sellout crowd of 47,346 for a second or two. The slugger has two games left to match Maris on New York’s current homestand.
MIAMI — Don Mattingly made it clear that the Miami Marlins sending Braxton Garrett to the minor leagues on Sept. 13 had nothing to do with his performance. The 25-year-old left-handed starting pitcher had been crafting a breakout season as he filled in a spot in the Marlins’ rotation.
Esteban Quiroz hit a go-ahead single in the eighth, his second in three innings, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 for their fourth straight win. Quiroz lined a two-out hit off Yohan Ramirez (1-1) to left in the eighth, driving in Jared Young. Two innings earlier, he chopped an infield single to cap a three-run sixth for the Cubs, who have won eight of 11. The Pirates (55-96) have lost eight straight, and must win at least eight of their final 11 to avoid reaching 100 losses for the 10th time.
Andrew McCutchen drove in three runs, passing 1,000 RBIs for his career, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3. McCutchen put the Brewers ahead to stay when he drove in Rowdy Tellez with a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning. The five-time All-Star made it 5-2 with a two-run double in the seventh, running his total to 1,002 RBIs. Milwaukee earned its third consecutive win, hanging on in the race for an NL wild card.

WICHITA, Kan. — Republican attorney general candidate Kris Kobach has unveiled a new strategy for removing abortion rights from the state constitution a month after Kansas voters affirmed those rights by a wide margin.
Dean Kremer pitched a four-hitter, Adley Rutschman homered and the Baltimore Orioles kept themselves squarely in the playoff hunt by defeating the Houston Astros 6-0. The Orioles started the day trailing Seattle by four games in the race for the third and final AL wild-card spot. Kremer walked two, struck out six and did not allow a runner past second base. It was the third straight impressive performance by an Orioles starter, following Jordan Lyles’ three-hitter against Detroit and Kyle Bradish pitching into the ninth inning of a shutout against AL West-leading Houston on Thursday night. Baltimore has 15 shutouts this season — its most since 1992 — including three against the Astros.
