Texas quarterbacks Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card and Maalik Murphy all practiced Monday as they recover from various ailments, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters. Ewers, who won Texas' starting job in the offseason, notably suffered a shoulder injury during the first quarter of the Longhorns' Week 2 loss to Alabama and did not return before missing Texas' Week 3 victory against UTSA. Sarkisian said Monday's practice a welcomed sight after none of the three aforementioned quarterbacks practiced the previous Monday.

"They all practiced today, which is positive," Sarkisian said Monday, via Horns247. "That’s a really good sign. Last Monday, they didn’t all practice."

Card, Texas' Week 1 starter in 2021, replaced Ewers in the Alabama loss and suffered an ailment of his own. Ewers was seen limping at one point in the game before a high ankle sprain was later confirmed for the Austin native. Card played through the injury and started for Texas in Week 3 against UTSA amid Ewers' absence.

As for Murphy, Sarkisian said earlier in the month that the free freshman "was not healthy." Murphy hasn't seen playing time through three games. Murphy dealt with several injuries a year ago during his final season at Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra High.

Regarding Ewers' return to action, it is unclear when the Ohio State transfer and former top-ranked prospect will play next after going down with the injury against the Crimson Tide. While he did not play, Ewers was on the field ahead of Saturday’s game against UTSA warming up in a T-shirt and shorts. Notably, Ewers was not wearing a brace on his injured shoulder while stretching. Reports indicate Ewers could return much sooner than anticipated.

Sarkisian, last week, was pressed by reporters about Texas' quarterback situation, but the second-year Longhorns coach didn't budge.

"You guys can keep poking the bear on what I do at quarterback," Sarkisian said Thursday via Zoom when asked who would start in Week 3. "At the end of the day, I'm not going to give you game-planning decisions or how we practice. There's a reason you guys don't come to practice. If I wanted you to know who took snaps, I'd let you come to practice."

Ewers and Card were the two contenders in Texas' offseason quarterback battle before Ewers defeated Card for the job. Ewers was 16-for-24 passing for 225 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his Week 1 debut against Louisiana-Monroe. Texas returns to action at Texas Tech in Week 4. Both teams are 1-2 entering their Big 12 opener in Lubbock.
